Cosmetic Dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry includes a variety of different procedures used to preserve a person’s dental health, help natural teeth last a lifetime, and create a confident smile. Advancements in cosmetic dentistry have made it possible to correct many different issues. Whether a person feels his or her teeth should be whiter, or he or she wants an entirely new smile, cosmetic dentistry can have a major impact.
Cosmetic dentistry begins with a complete dental exam. A dentist must first ensure a person’s dental health is in good order and that no underlying health issues are causing a problem. Once a person is deemed healthy, efforts can begin to enhance his or her smile.
What are the most common cosmetic dental procedures?

Cosmetic dental procedures correct a variety of problems. A person suffering from missing teeth, discoloration, chipping, or gaps can benefit from various cosmetic dentistry options. If you are unhappy with your smile, consider one of the following:
- Bonding: fills gaps in teeth or alters tooth color. It is not permanent.
- Contouring and reshaping: straightens chipped, cracked, crooked, or overlapping teeth
- Whitening or bleaching: whitens teeth. It is not permanent and most people undergo routine whitening treatments. Whitening can be done at-home, but in-office whitening by a dentist is far more effective.
- Veneers: applies a thin coating to the front of teeth to alter the color or shape. Veneers are a permanent way to correct crooked, chipped, uneven, or discolored teeth.
Determining which procedure is right for you can be a challenge. Schedule an appointment for an exam and share your concerns with your dentist. He or she will explain the various options available to correct a problem. Many cosmetic concerns also affect the health of your teeth, so you should never feel as if your concerns are not important or that pursuing a correction is not worth it.
