Cosmetic Dental Fillings
Tooth Cavity Colored & Cosmetic Dental Fillings
Cosmetic dental fillings are an alternative to the silver fillings that are often used to repair teeth. Silver fillings are durable and cost-effective, but many people do not like the look of silver in their teeth. Alternatives include fillings made from porcelain, ionomers, and composite resins colored to match the enamel of a person’s natural teeth. Cosmetic dental fillings are not noticeable when a person smiles or talks, but they do not last as long as silver fillings. However, for people concerned about the look of silver fillings, cosmetic fillings are the way to go.
Composite Fillings
Composite fillings are made from a blend of resins and fine particles. The goal is to blend the materials to achieve a color as close to a person’s natural teeth as possible. Composite resins might also be bonded or cemented to the affected area to create the strongest adhesion to natural teeth as possible.
Ionomers
Ionomers are another dental filling option. These are similar to composite fillings, but are made from a blend of glass and acrylic resins. Ionomers are most commonly used near the gum line or tooth root because pressure is not applied to these areas when chewing. Ionomers are fragile, but are strengthened over time because they release fluoride that gradually strengthens the materials.
Porcelain or Ceramic Fillings
These fillings are typically made from a blend of porcelain, ceramic, and glass powder. They are often used in instances of crowns, onlays and inlays, and veneers. They are quite durable, but not so much as traditional silver fillings. These are a great option for people who are willing to invest in natural looking fillings, but still want something durable.
